Arthur Bunyan Beattie was born on 22 March 1891, the son of Michael Beattie and Clara Sabrian (nee Smith). He was christened at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Chapel Allerton on 7 May 1891, the christening record shows that the family were living at Moor Allerton Lodge Cottage.

The 1891 Census shows that Arthur was 2 weeks old, living with his father (a domestic gardener), his mother, his aunt Millicent Smith, his brother William and his sister Edith.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family was living at Southlands Farm on King Lane. Arthur was now 10 years old and had two more siblings – Reginald and Margaret Victoria.

The 1911 Census shows that Arthur was still living with his family in a 5 room house on King Lane, presumably Southlands Farm. He was now 20 years old and working as an “Improver” in hair dressing.

Arthur’s brother, Reginald, died in Belgium at Ypres on 24 April 1915.

Arthur married Primrose May Williams on the 12 June 1916 at St Matthew’s Church in Chapel Allerton when he was 25 years old. He was a hair dresser and was living at 112 Harrogate Road. Primose was 23 and living at Southlands Farm! Primrose gave birth to twins on the 7 March 1917 – Margaret Mary and Reginald Douglas.

Arthur joined up or was conscripted sometime after he was married and he served as a private in the 17th West Yorkshire Regiment, his service number was 41661. He died on 26 October 1918 and is remembered on the Chapel Allerton War Memorial in the St Matthew’s Churchyard.
