John Daker was born about 1840 to Joseph Daker and Elizabeth (nee Senton).

The 1841 Census shows that John was 8 months old and living with his parents and older sister, Sarah.

By the time of the 1851 Census the family had moved to Town Street in Chapel Allerton, John was now 10 years old and a scholar.

The 1861 Census records a 20 year old John working as a butcher and living in the household of Richard Johnson on the Leeds-Harrogate Road. Richard was a butcher employing “1 Man & 1 Boy”. Under “Relation to Head of Family” John is described as “Journey Man”.

John married Jane Ann Stead on 23 October 1864 in St Peter’s Church. John is recorded as a butcher and Jane’s father was a Cloth Dresser. John and Jane had the following children:

  • Sarah Elizabeth (1865 – )
  • Charles Henry (1869 – 1943)
  • Emma (1874 – )
  • Florrie (1878 – )

A directory for 1866 shows that John was working as a butcher from 178 Meanwood Road. The 1871 Census records that the family were living in Buslingthorpe Yard, possibly in the household of George Gilpen, and that John was a butcher. The Census is a little confusing as the markings have George Gilpen and Jane Ann in one household and the John, Sarah Elizabeth and Charles Herny in the next one with Charles Henry recorded as a girl!

By the time of the 1881 Census the family had moved to 1 Stonegate. John was now 40 years old and still a butcher.

John was recorded as 50 years old and still working as a butcher in the 1891 Census. They were now at 101 Buslingthorpe Lane.

John died on 4 September 1899 and was buried on 7 September in the graveyard at St Matthew’s in Chapel Allerton.
