Anne Middleton was probably born at the beginning of 1842, she was the daughter of William Middleton and Mary Ward. She was baptised at St George’s Church in Leeds on 4 July 1842, William is shown as being a solicitor and the family were living at 3 St George’s Terrace.

The 1851 Census shows that the family were living at 12 St George’s Terrace and the family consisted of William and Mary with 8 children. William was an Attorney and Solicitor. Anne is described as an 8 year old scholar.

Anne’s younger brother, Frank, died on 4 May 1857 by which time the family had moved to Gledhow Grange in Chapel Allerton. Anne’s mother, Mary, died on 15 June 1859. Both were buried in the Chapel Allerton Churchyard.

By the time of the 1861 Census, Anne’s father had remarried to Sarah Ward, his sister-in-law. Anne was now 18 years old.

Anne married John William Asquith at Leeds Parish Church on 22 October 1873. John William was a Cloth Finisher, just like his father, Joseph. Sadly, John died on the 16 March 1874.

Anne had moved back to her parents’ home at Hawkhills, Geldhow Lane by the time of the 1881 Census, where she is recorded as a widow, daughter and aged 38. Her father William, apparently owned both Gledhow Grange and Hawkhills.

Her father died in 1884 and the 1891 Census records that she was living with her widowed younger brother, Charles, at 124 Harrogate Road. Charles was an Engineer’s Valuer Commissioning Agent and Anne was living on her own means.

By 1901, Charles had moved to 1 Stainbeck Lane and was a manufacturer employing a workforce but I can’t read what he was manufacturing though it might be “Perambulator”. Annie had moved with him and was now 58 years old. 1 Stainbeck Lane was also known as Stainbeck Cottage and I believe it was situated where the Coop is now. Charles and Anne were still living there at the time of the 1911 Census aged 61 and 68 respectively. No occupation was recorded for them.

Charles died on 7 June 1916 and was recorded as living at 12 Westfield Terrace. Probate shows that he left £218 14s 2d to Anne. Anne continued to live at 12 Westfield Terrace and is recorded as living there at the age of 79 in the 1921 Census on “Independent means”. She was still living there at the time of her death on 21 April 1933 aged 91. She was buried in the Chapel Allerton churchyard on 24 April 1933.

Probate reads:
