Joseph Bean was born on 12 June 1851 in Ulleskelf near Tadcaster, the first son of Charles Bean and Ann (nee Nettleton). He was baptised on 16 June 1851 at St John the Baptist Church in Kirkby Wharfe, the parish register shows that his father worked as a butcher.

The 1861 Census records that the family had moved and were living on Old High Road in Chapel Allerton. Joseph was 9 years old and at school.

By the time of the 1871 Census the family had moved to Regent Street and Joseph was now 19 years old and working as a book keeper.

Joseph married Emma Charlotte Harding in 1876 and they had the following children:

  • Harriet (1879- )
  • Annie (1879-1984)
  • Joseph (1888- ) (n.b. recorded as Charles in the 1891 Census)

In 1881, the census shows that the Joseph and family were living at 1 Regent Terrace, Joseph was 29 years old and working as a “Stonemerchant Clerk”.

The 1891 Census record was a bit harder to find as Joseph was recorded as “Bean Joseph” but I finally tracked the family down and they were living at 1 Victoria Street, Joseph working as a “Stone Merchant’s Traveller”.

By 1901, Joseph was a stone merchant employing workers. The family were still living at 1 Victoria Street, Harriet was a milliner, Annie was a dress maker and Joseph was presumably still at school as he was aged 13.

Harriet left home and married in 1907, by the time of the 1911 Census the rest of the family had moved to 56 Pasture Lane in Chapel Allerton. Joseph was now 59 years old still working as a Stone Merchant employing a number of people. Annie. 31, was a dress maker and Joseph jnr, 23, was working as a brick layer.

Joseph was still living at 56 Pasture Lane when he died on 22 June 1926. He was buried in the graveyard at St Matthews in Chapel Allerton.
