Charles Bean was born in 1829 in Ulleskelf near Tadcaster in Yorkshire to Thomas and Mary Anne. He was baptised on 11 October 1829 at St John the Baptist Church in Kirkby Wharfe, the parish register shows that Thomas worked as a butcher. The 1841 Census confirms that Thomas was a butcher and Charles is shown as being about 10 years old.

Charles married Ann Nettleton in October 1849, probably at St John’s but that needs confirming. They had the following children:

The 1851 Census shows that Charles was working as a butcher living with Ann in Ulleskelf. By the time Harriet was born the family were living in Chapel Allerton and the 1861 Census records that the family were living on Old High Road in Chapel Allerton, Charles working as a “butcher journeyman”, this is someone who has completed an apprenticeship with a master butcher.

Over the next decade, three of the children died: Fanny, Thomas and Harriet. By the time of the 1871 Census Charles and Ann had moved to Regent Street with Joseph, Mary Anne and Charles Edward. Charles was still working as a butcher and Joseph was now 19 and working as a book keeper.

They were still living on Regent Street according to the 1881 Census, Charles was now aged 51 and working as a butcher, Ann was described as “Butcher’s Wife”, Mary Anne was “employed at home”, Charles Edward was a butcher and Thomas was still at school.

The 1891 Census shows that Charles and Ann had moved to 56 Harrogate Road with Charles still a butcher at 61 years of age. Their son Charles Edward was now 25 and working as a butcher and Thomas was a “Butcher’s Assistant”.

Charles and Ann were living at 5 Pasture Place at the time of the 1901 Census but Charles was now working as a “Coffee Dealer” at the age of 72.

Charles died on 14 May 1904 and was buried in the graveyard at St Matthew’s on 14 May.
