Mary Ann Bean was born on 8 September 1861 to Charles Bean and Ann (nee Nettleton). She was baptised on 5 January 1862 at St Matthew’s Church in Chapel Allerton.

The 1871 Census shows Mary living with her family at Regent Street, she is recorded as a 9 year old scholar.

The family were still living at Regent Street at the time of the 1881 Census and Mary was 19 and described as “Employed at home Dom“.

Mary married Frank Hargreaves on 8 March 1887 at St Peter’s Church in Leeds, she was 25 years old. Frank was a 28 year old Book Keeper living on North Street. They had the following children:

The 1891 Census shows that Mary, Frank and Henry were living at 11 Back Allerton Terrace and that Frank was working as a Clerk at an Auctioneers. By 1901 they had moved to 7 Regent Terrace, Frank was still an auctioneer’s clerk. Mary was now 39 years old, Henry was 10 and Eustace was 1.

The family had moved to 24 Hawthorn Mount by the time of the 1911 Census. Frank was “Clerk to Sheriffs Office”, Henry was signwriter and Eustace was still at school.

Henry was to die on 5 August 1916 during World War 1. Mary died on 27 July 1935 and was buried on 30 July in “Leeds General Cemetery” now known as St George’s Field and is part of Leeds University’s campus. May was 76 years old, a widow, and had been living at 9 Lofthouse Terrace
