Thomas was born about 1797 in Broughton near Skipton according to the 1861 Census.

Thomas married Sarah Whitaker on 21 February 1822 at St Peter’s Church in Leeds. The marriage register shows that Thomas was a Corn Factor and that one of the witnesses was Thomas Skelton. Sadly, Sarah died on 4 January 1828 and she was buried in the church yard of St Matthew’s Church in Chapel Allerton.

Thomas remarried on 21 July 1831 at St Peter’s Church to Mary Skelton. Thomas was still working as a Corn Factor and, again, one of the witnesses was a Thomas Skelton. Thomas and Mary had the following children:

  • Jane Isabel (1834-1841)
  • Thomas Skelton (1836- )
  • Henry (1838- )
  • Alexander (1840- )
  • Charles (1841- )
  • Susan (1843- )
  • Albert (1845- )
  • Sarah Louisa (1846- )
  • Frederick William (1848-1915)
  • Francis Herbert (1850-1930)

At the time of the 1841 Census Thomas was living on Headingley Hill in Headingley with his wife and oldest three children. He is described as a Corn Factor.

The 1851 Census shows that the family were living at The Elms on Headingley Hill and Thomas was still a Corn Factor. The census records that there were seven servants.

Thomas was still living at the Elms, which was described as being on Leeds Otley Road, according to the 1861 Census. His wife, Mary, Thomas Skelton, Albert and the two youngest children were still at home. Thomas was still described as a Corn Factor, as was his son Thomas.
