Joseph was born on 17 July 1824, the son of William Pollard and Susanna (nee Smith). He was baptised on 22 August 1824 at St Matthew’s Church and the register shows that the family were living at Allerton Grange and that William was a farmer.

The 1841 Census shows that the family were still living at Allerton Grange, Joseph is now 15 years old and his father is recorded as a Land Agent.

In the 1851 Census it shows that the family were living on Lidget Lane – which may mean that they were still at Allerton Grange. William was recorded as a Land Agent & Farmer 90 acres employging 3 labourers. Two of his sons, William and John were working as land agents. I am unable to interpret Joseph’s occupation. It looks like “F Son” which I would take to be “Farmer’s Son”. He was 26 years old and I would have expected him to have some sort of occupation!

Joseph’s occupation in the 1851 Census

Joseph’s father died at the end of May and his mother died 9 years later in 1860. I’m not sure where Joseph was at the time of the 1861 Census.

In 1871 Joseph was living with his brother William on Lidgett Lane, presumably at Allerton Grange, he was now 46 years old and recorded as an “Annuitant” ie someone living off an annuity.

The 1881 Census shows that Joseph’s younger brother, Charles, is now the head of the family living at Allerton Grange. Charles is a land agents clerk and Joseph, now 56, was living off “Income from Interest of money”.

Joseph died on 1 November 1886 and was buried in the graveyard at St Matthew’s Church on 4 November.
