Margaret Ryder Shillito was born on 10 October 1796 in Leeds, probably in Kirkgate, to William Shillito and Esther (nee Ryder). She was baptised on 21 November 1796 at St Peter’s Church in Leeds.
At the time of Margaret’s marriage to John Garland on 14 November 1839 she had been living on “Upperhead Row”. After the marriage they lived on Coburg Street in Leeds, John was a widower with five children by his first wife, Mary Chapman and worked as a builder.
At the time of the 1841 Census Margaret was living on Coburg Street with her husband and four step children – Henry, Harriet, Robert and William.
The 1851 Census shows that the Margaret and John had moved to Town Street in Chapel Allerton with young Henry who worked as a manufacturing chemist employing 3 men.
Margaret died on 8 October 1860 in Scarborough and was buried on 11 October in the churchyard at St Matthew’s, Chapel Allerton.
