Mary Jane Wood was born on 10 November 1852 in Chapel Allerton to James Wood and Mary (nee Pawson).

The 1861 Census shows the family living at “Union Row” which, on the census, is between Phoenix Lodge on Harrogate Road and Town Street. Mary was recorded as an 8 year old scholar.

In 1871 the family were living on Town Road (which may have been Union Terrace and might have been the same address as in 1861) and Mary was 18 years old working for her father as a “Boot and Shoe Maker”.

Mary’s father died at some point in the next few years. Mary married Frederick William Charlesworth on 21 February 1878 at Brunswick Wesleyan Church. Frederick was working as a pawn broker.

Mary and Frederick had the following two children, both who died in infancy:

At the time of the 1881 Census, Frederick and Mary were living in Hunslet near Jack Lane with their 2 year old son “F David”. Frederick was a beer seller and they were living in an Inn whose name I can’t read on the census.

In 1891, at the age of 37, Frederick and Mary had moved to Rose Villa on the Leeds Road in Pannal near Harrogate and Frederick was now recorded as a “Retired Publican”. Mary’s widowed sister, Anne Elizabeth Hield and her children – Ethel (9) and Jessie (8). Anne’s husband, James Henry Hield, had been a commercial traveller.

The 1901 Census shows that Frederick, Mary and their niece, Jessie, had moved to 14 Town Street in Chapel Allerton.

Mary and Frederick were still living at 14 Town Street at the time of the 1911 Census.

Mary’s husband died on 12 December 1917 aged 63. Mary continued to live at 14 Town Street and died aged 69 on 15 November 1922. She was buried with her husband in St Matthew’s churchyard.
