Mary Bigglestone was born on 13 October 1880 to George Bigglestone and Jane (nee Whitaker Tinsdale). The family were living at Claremont House, 4 Well Lane in Chapel Allerton. Mary was baptised on 20 January 1881 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel.

The 1881 Census shows that Mary was 5 months old living with her parents and an older sister, Ethel Maria, at Claremont House and that her father, George, was a brick layer.

In 1891, according to the census, the family had moved to 12 Northbrook Street. George was still a brick layer and Mary and her sister were scholars.

The family were still at 12 Northbrook Street at the time of the 1901 Census. George still worked as a brick layer. Mary was working as a dressmaker.

Mary married George Reed Corner on 29 December 1902 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Chapel Allerton. They had one child:

  • Edna Jane (1904-1976)

George died on 3 May 1905 and was buried in St Matthew’s churchyard on 5 May 1905.

The 1911 Census shows that Mary was now 30 years old and that she had moved back in with her parents at 12 Northbrook Street along with her daughter. She is shown to be a widow but she does not appear to be working.

Mary remarried to Walter Robert Chaston on 16 December 1911, this time at St Matthew’s Church. Walter was a chauffeur and appears to have moved into 12 Northbrook Street with the rest of the family.

Mary and Walter had one daughter, Muriel, who was born on 8 November 1912. The family were living at 11 Hawthorne Road in Chapel Allerton. Muriel died on 17 August 1925 and was buried in St Matthew’s churchyard on 19 August 1925. The burial register shows that she was 12 years old and living at 64 Victoria Street in Chapel Allerton.

The 1939 England and Wales Register shows that Walter and Mary had moved to 45 Woodland Lane, Walter was working as a motor mechanic and Mary was a house wife.

Walter died on 21 October 1957 at St James Hospital. Mary survived him until she died on 7 August 1972 whilst living at 45 Woodland Lane in Chapel Allerton. She was buried on 11 August in St Matthew’s churchyard.
