Joseph Chadwick was born on 27 September 1834. He was son of William Chadwick and Hannah.

Joseph appears to have started work for his father as a dyer. The 1851 Census shows that his father employed 50 “males” and 25 “Female” in his dying business. They lived at Chadwick Lodge located south of the River Aire in Leeds on the junction of Crown Point Road and Black Bull Street.

In 1861 the census shows that Joseph was 26 years old, unmarried, and living at Chadwick Lodge with his mother and younger siblings. His father was not at home and Hannah is not shown as being a widow. Joseph was working as an “Iron Merchant Clerk”.

Joseph married Ellen Sophia Calvert on 18 August 1869 at St Peter’s Church in Leeds. Joseph was recorded as being a 34 years old bachelor working as an Iron Merchant and resident at Chadwick Lodge. His father was working as an “Agent”. Ellen was a 20 year old spinster living at Springfield Place, her father, John Procter Calvert, was a gunsmith.

Joseph and Ellen had the following children:

By the time of the 1871 Census the family had moved to Louis Street in what is now Chapeltown. Joseph is recorded as an Iron Merchant.

The 1881 Census shows that the family had moved to “Normanby Villa” which I think is part of Newton Villa in Chapel Allerton. Joseph was now 46 years old and still an Iron Merchant.

The family had moved again by 1891, this time to 33 Harrogate Road which, I think, has now been rebuilt as Seven Arts. Joseph, now 56 years old, continued to work as an Iron Merchant.

Joseph died on 1 February 1892 and was buried on 10 March 1892 in St Matthew’s graveyard with his father-in-law, John Procter Calvert.
